Shameless self-promotion, November 16 edition: My NEW book, The Battle of White Sulphur Springs: Averell Fails to Secure West Virginia, is now out! This is the first and only detailed tactical study of this strategically important battle. It features the great maps of Steven Stanley and I am really excited about it. For those who have already ordered, you orders will ship on Saturday. If anyone is interested, please contact me!

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! That gives me extra incentinve to knock off the class work on Grapes of Wrath so I can take one of the volumes from you to deer camp! Yowza!

Thanks so much for tackling this subject — bought your new book, and look forward to getting into it. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading through your site, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy your published work. I live just about 15-20 minutes from White Sulphur Springs, WV.

A small request, if I may — I think it’d be beyond awesome if you could do a full cavalryman profile on Vincent A. “Clawhammer” Witcher! At least, I don’t think one has been done by you, I couldn’t find it through the ‘search’ function. One of my ancestors rode with him in the 34th Batt’n VA Cavalry. Witcher was…an interesting character, to say the least.

Thanks for the great site and great work.

Just received this. Another excellent piece of work. Text and research by Wittenberg, maps by Stanley – that’s a tough combination to beat. Well done.

I finally just started it and really enjoyed the capsules on the various regimental commanders and Averell.
