Because of its geographic location, Columbus typically does not get big snow storms. What usually happens is that it will start out as snow and then switch over to sleet or freezing rain (what I generally describe as slop) and sometimes to just plain rain. We’re usually just a little too far east to get all snow and a little too far west to get all rain. Here’s a good example. In December 2003, just a couple of days before Christmas, we had a storm that started out as snow–about 8 inches–and then turned to freezing rain. When it was all said and done we had 2.5 inches of ice on top of the snow and no power for nearly four days. The rain/snow line was about 20 miles west of us.

For a change, this time, the storm went right up the spine of the Appalachians, meaning that the rain/snow line is about 75 miles east of Columbus. The White Death From Above began falling yesterday morning about 9:00 and came down steadily until about 7:00 P.M. We had five or six inches of snow and then it stopped for a few hours before phase two of the storm came along during the night.

As I write this, we’ve had at least a foot of the White Death From Above, and we’re under a blizzard warning for the rest of the day. We’re looking at another several inches of the White Death before it ends. This is, without question, the biggest single snowfall that has occurred in the 20+ years that I have lived here in Columbus. Pretty much everything in our county is shut down at this point and they’re trying to keep people off the roads. Watching the dogs trying to negotiate their way through the White Death is quite humorous.

The snowdog laying down is Aurora. She’s two. The one running through the snow is Nero, who’s three. They’re loving this stuff.

I’ve had quite enough of the White Death From Above and am eager for spring to come. Of course, with it being March, it’s supposed to be 50 on Tuesday, meaning that all of this will turn to slop in no time flat. Spring cannot come soon enough.

UPDATE, 12:30 PM: I just was out in the yard with the dogs–I made the mistake of throwing one of their toys out there, and it was a real challenge getting them back in the house with the toy–and we’ve probably got 14-16 inches of White Death in the backyard. And it’s the dry, light, fluffy stuff. Like I said, spring cannot come soon enough.

UPDATE, 6:15 PM: The White Death From Above finally seems to be tapering to an end. We have approximately 18 inches of the stuff here at our house. The official records are set at Port Columbus International Airport, and the airport marked 20 inches of total snowfall, shattering the all-time record for a single storm since records have been kept here. We’ve now got blowing and drifting. Lots of fun. I hereby vote that the rest of winter be canceled due to lack of interest.

This photo is looking down my driveway at the street. You can’t tell where the driveway ends and the grass begins because it’s under more than a foot and a half of snow.

    Eric,

I hear you man! It was hillarious this morning. Remember, I’ve got two dachshunds.

I guess every region has odd weather from time to time. Here Oklahma City last Sunday evening we had three tornados on the ground, followed by very heavy tropical rains. Monday morning it was snowing. Strange.

    Dear Eric,

Thanks for reminding me why I moved from Michigan to Texas.

But, friend, look on the good side. Such bad weather encourages indoor reading, research and writing on the Civil War thus turning something depressing into a blessing.

    Best wishes always,
    Lanny

Here in southern Maine we’ve had a record year for snow. 91″ total by the end of Feb. plus one good storm since then with the rest of March and April still to come. We’re getting rain today but I’m betting our ski season goes into the first week or so of May at least.

Several problems locally though with roofs collapsing from the weight of the wet snow and we’re likely to have some flooding problems when this all starts to melt. My shepherd loves it though. The way she bounds through it she looks like a “snow porpoise”.

No complaints from me though. Like Lanny says a good book (accompanied by a generous glass of Jameson’s in my case) makes a snowstorm something to look forward to!

White Death From Above? Hhmm. That always seems to happen here around May, when all those pigeons begin roosting in my apple tree…

‘Bout time you Columbusianos get what we always get here in western Pa. But this time, we’re getting blizzard snow on top of a half inch of ice. Just lovely.

Sorry, just rain here in the Garden State, but a lot of flooding all over the place in this neck of the woods.

Stayed inside all day and watched hockey games all afternoon. ๐Ÿ™‚

Eric, my wife says to tell you that you are a wuss. You need to get a pair of cross-country skis to take advantage of your new conditions. Your dogs understand the wonderful opportunity which has descended upon them from above. Why don’t you?
Of course, after multiple snowfalls of around 8-12 inches this year (I’ve lost count of the precise number), I’m ready for spring myself…

Heard on the news this morning about Columbus having the record snowfall since Biblical times or something! You guys might as well move up here!

Cool pics of the pups. They’ve got the right attitude!

Sounds like global warming to me. Did you forget to pay your UN carbon tax?

All last year Southern California had cooler to chillier weather, but no never mind. Now the midwest gets cold wintry blasts — all normal for normal non-climate changes. How bout calling it for what it is: There is no world climate change!

I just saw Al Gore on the news – he said to ignore the “snowfall” in Ohio. Didn’t happen, he says. He then left in his private jet to go to his 12,000 sq ft home to burn up 1 million megawatts of electricity per day.

See? Nothing to worry about! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Eric,
Gotta ask–is Nero named for the emperor or the detective?
Love the dogs, makes me want to dig out the pix of mine playing in the Blizzard of ’95 in Winchester.
    Regards,
    Keith

    Keith,

All of our dogs have been named based on a Roman emperor theme. Our first golden had been named by the breeder when we got him. She named him Caesar, and it really suited his personality. When I registered him with the AKC, I decided to have some fun with it, so his registered name was Great Caesar of the Flatlands. Consequently, we stuck with the theme. The second was Augustus, Emperor of Olde Orchard (Augie), and the female we rescued had her name changed from Brandy (bad fit) to Cleopatra, Queen of the Scioto (Cleo), which was a great fit.

When we lost Caesar, we got a pup and named him Nero. His actual name is Lakesyde’s Fiddler Full of Fire. Then, after we put Cleo down, we got Aurora. None of the Roman empress names fit, so we went with the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora (Rory). Her actual name is Lakesyde’s Have a Good Morning.

    Eric
