]]>Having grown up in Durango, and having held his Metal of Honor in my own hands, it was nice to finally read the story that goes with it.
My father has donated many of the historical items to the Animas Museum in Durango, if you’re ever down south – you should visit!
The picture of Buckskin Charlie on the wall with the Southern Ute Tribe at my father’s is one I will never forget.
Thank you for the article!

David Day founded and edited the Solid Muldoon in Ouray Colorado. He moved the newspaper to Durango Colorado in 1892(?). He sold it to the Durango Herald about the time he became the Agent for the Southern Ute Indians.
He then founded the Durango Democrat, which then directly competed with the Durango Herald as a daily paper. It operated until the 1920’s when Day’s son sold it to the Durango Herald. So the present day Durango Herald is descended from David Day’s newspapers in two different ways.
Also: Day became Colonel Day after his appointment to the Militia staff of the first Democratic Governor of Colorado James B Grant. Day was an Aide de Camp in the rolls of the militia. With the rank of Colonel.
Day was not the sort to take honors that did not belong to him. And would not appreciate your having said that he had.
After all, as his wife said, David Day was never happier than when he was in a fight.

]]>Again, a most enjoyable article.
Thank you
