I have a strong interest in the Civil War Cavalry. I sent a response to one of your blogs regarding the Wilson-Kautz Raid as my Great-Grandfather participated in that affair while in Co. “B” of the Eleventh Pennsylvania Cavalry. I have National Archives info listing him among the many disjointed missing following the debacle at Reams Station on June 29, 1864. I also have a copy of his discharge muster whereby he evidently left from Richmond with a Spencer Carbine, a Colt revolver and a Sabre and belt which were deducted from his final bounty payment. He was born in 1840 in Wayne County, PA and died in Morris County of my home state of Kansas in 1931. He received his soldiers pension from its offering until his death and was active in the GAR post at White City, Kansas. I have a question, why does the cavalry of Kautz, to include the 11th PA, have the label of “rag-tag and bob-tail” attached to them from a few of the sources I have come across. Some of the sources I have studied rate them as excellent fighters under the leadership of Col. Samuel Spear and then under Randal Mackenzie to Five Forks and their presence at Appomattox.
