Other than that, I knew of him as a 19th century “historian” of the 1777 Saratoga Campaign, as to which he reached some highly questionable conclusions, including that the failure was solely Burgoyne’s fault and success was entirely due to Schuyler.

Even in a fawning two-volume biography published in 1908 that reprints many of his letters and articles, DePeyster comes across as a dilettante and elitist buffoon. He loved uniforms and medals and displaying his knowledge, yet turned down positions during the war that he deemed beneath his stature. Also, to continually turn down field service due to poor health while being capable of a long trip to Europe as a military observer strikes me as odd.

There is a funny encounter with Depeyster recorded in “Generals in Bronze.”

Around the time of Lee’s death, DePeyster interviewed Mahone and then published an article in the NY Historical Magazine. He maintained that Mahone was the brains of the Confederate military in the last years, Lee was his puppet, and Jubal Early was an incompetent coward. Some of this came from remarks Mahone intended to be off-the-record. Not only was their widespread outrage in the south for the Lee comments, Early nearly shot Mahone. In the end, the editors humiliated DePeyster but letting Mahone pay to publish a “corrected” version. The “DePeyster Affair” helped the “Lee cult” take off in 1870, and made Early and his revived Southern Historical Society the main arbiters of Confederate history, much to the later chagrin of people like Longstreet.

To be honest, reading his correspondence with Mahone, DePeyster comes off as a dilettante. Today I suspect he would believe every meme he read on Facebook.
