Jackson. My 2G grandfather was KIA Dec 20 1863 at Covington, VA attempting to prevent Averill’s forces from crossing the Island Ford Bridge. The incompetence of Jackson and most of his inferiors was a shock to discover. Armstrong’s History of the 26th VA Cav has a description of this fiasco. Fortunately, my ancestor had already had a young son who survived, becoming my G grandfather in Tazewell, VA.

Jackson! Yes, he was a good man and a good soldier. His 19th Virginia Cavalry fought a number of savage Cavalry on Cavalry engagements at the end of the war along with their sister unit, the 17th Virginia Cavalry. Many of Jackson’s men participated in the burning of the Burning Springs oil wells in Wirt County, West Virginia and a good many of the men in several companies of the 19th were also former members of that somewhat notorious guerrilla group known as the Moccasin Rangers that terrorized central West Virginia to the counties along the Ohio River until December of 1861. My book on the 17th Virginia Cavalry has a number of their daring deeds listed in the closing chapters. Herman E. Matheney’s Wood County West Virginia in Civil War times also gives an excellent story dealing with the famous Parkersburg riot and fight that Jackson was a part of!
