Reverend Erastus Blakeslee was ordained for his first pastorate at my church, the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield MA in 1880. He left Greenfield after three years for a position in Fairhaven CT (1883-1887), where he was President of the First Connecticut Christian Endeavor. Blakeslee was pastor in Spencer MA from 1887 to 1892, during which time he published a book about his Civil War unit, the Connecticut Cavalry Volunteers.

Blakeslee subsequently left ministry to solely pursue writing, authoring over 160 volumes in the next sixteen years. His Blakeslee Quarterly and Bible Study Union Sunday School Lessons were highly popular and widely used in Church Schools of the day. His work led him to be honored as an Associate Member of the Victoria Institute in London, England.

Francis Barlow is buried. The cemetery is all but fogotten and sits practically in some person’s backyard with Rev War, War of 1812 and CW dead. I will be in Boston later this month and hope to locate his grave, along with paying my respects to Barlow.
