The course would have passed through what is today a housing subdivision, but completely bypassed the battlefield, leaving only VA 3 as a main traffic corridor through the grounds.

I realize nothing happens in isolation, but had it been done then, Wal-Mart wouldn’t be looking to build at the current site. But rather further west. What might have been….

They’ll conveniently blame it on the economy and let it slide. I particularly like the resident who said “That was in the past, we have to think about the future.” It’s exactly this shortsightedness that dooms our battlefields. What a shame.

I pray that something can be done to stop this. The destruction of the rural character of this place in the name of profit would be a slap in the face of those brave men who suffered so terribly in 1864. The very thought that the view from Ellwood might be spoiled by a Wal-Mart is disgusting. I know that Wal-Mart has no shame; can the same be said of the Board of Supervisors? And sorry Wal-Mart, but “commemorative markers” just won’t cut it. Unreal.
