I had been a member of the ‘Friends of Gettysburg’ and as well as it’s metamorphosis into the ‘Foundation’. I have been disappointed over it’s growth as a support arm to the NPS at Getttysburg. The Foundation’s emphasis on asset growth and financial status as a 501-3c has not translated in the full dissemination, display and education of the Civil War through public access of historic artifacts and property sites. While I support public/private coalitions to preserve and educate, I find more of the Foundations acquisitions, in recent years, to be restricted to those willing to pay extra fees or to those willing booking your wedding event with them. As a result, this has pushed many Civil War enthusiasts, researchers and some scholars away from the organization. In the effort of all Americans to preserve and disseminate our rich history, we must be vigilant to the covetousness of the non-profit balance sheet.
